Panagia of Chrysopigi is not another church. It’s a unique and impressive landmark of Sifnos and Greece in general. The monastery of Chrysopigi is the most photographed spot on the island. It's no coincidence that many couples choose the monastery of Chrysopigi to join their lives with the holy matrimony! The monastery of Chrysopigi, built-in 1650 on a rock, surrounded by the vastness of the Aegean is a visual delight for every visitor! Next to Chrysopigi monastery lies the beach of Apokofto with its crystal-clear azure waters. Traditional restaurants, grocery stores, and accommodations are located in the area.
Kamares is located on the northwest side of Sifnos. It is the largest coastal settlement on the island and is home to the port of Sifnos. It was named after the caves in the area. Downtown the settlement, there are numerous restaurants, bars, mini-markets, and shops selling traditional products, as well as many rental apartments and hotels. Above the harbor, at the top of the mountain, lies the monastery of Agios Simeon. The view during sunset is enchanting. The beach is one of the largest on the island and is awarded the Blue Flag of the European Union every year.
Apollonia is the capital of Sifnos, named after the god Apollo, worshiped in antiquity by the island's inhabitants. Characterized as a protected traditional settlement, Apollonia maintains its distinctive Cycladic style with narrow alleys, whitewashed houses, and beautiful churches with blue domes. In Apollonia, you can find the medical center, private clinics, pharmacies (which remain open until late at night during summer), banks, and travel agencies. Along the central cobblestone street, there are numerous local shops, jewelry stores, cafes, bars, and restaurants. The central square also houses the Folklore Museum of Sifnos, exhibiting items from the island's traditional life.
Artemonas is the second largest settlement in Sifnos. During the years of intense economic prosperity due to the residents' involvement in shipping, a distinct architectural style emerged, characterized by large neoclassical houses and lush gardens. It is worth visiting the area's churches, such as Panagia Kochi with its characteristic architecture, Panagia of Ammo, home to Panagia the Nun, a rare depiction of the Virgin Mary without Jesus, Panagia of Bali, and the church of Agios Spyridonas. At the top of the settlement, there are two well-preserved traditional windmills.
The coastal settlement of Vathi in Sifnos is located on the northwest side of the island. It sits within a bay protected from the winds, making it a popular destination for tourists arriving by boat. Both in the settlement and on the beach, cars are not allowed, so you'll need to leave your vehicle at the entrance of the settlement. It takes a few minutes walk to reach the beach.
A heliport is located in the area of Tholos, southeast of the island. It is located near Exambela, close to the Monastery of Panagia of Vrissiani, very close to the island's capital, Apollonia.
Exampela is a small picturesque village in Sifnos that is not a typical tourist destination. Its name means "abandoned vineyards turned into fields." Its narrow streets do not allow access by car, but a leisurely stroll through its quiet lanes can offer a different experience amid the intensity of summer. Visitors will have the opportunity to see one of Sifnos' most famous ancient towers, the Black Tower.
Kastro is perhaps the oldest and, by many, considered the most beautiful settlement on the island. It is built atop the ancient acropolis of Sifnos and has been continuously inhabited for five thousand years. Its architecture is a classic example of the Venetian period, with a strong defensive character that protected the settlement from pirate raids and aspiring conquerors.
Between Apollonia and Exambela lies the settlement of Katavati. The parish church of Agios Georgios grasps the visitor’s sight, while particularly interesting is the Church of Panagia of Aggelochtisti, which as per legends, was built by angels. Also in Katavati lies the Monastery of Fyrogia (16th century), which was restored in the 1970s and awarded Greece's first Europa Nostra Cultural Heritage Award. In the wider area of Katafygio, there are grocery stores, flower shops, restaurants, accommodations, and a gas station.
Platis Gialos is one of the most awarded beaches of Sifnos. It is the most popular tourist destination with many hotels, traditional taverns, restaurants, bars, and traditional ceramic workshops. The monastery of Panagia of the Mountain is a special destination for many couples who seek a romantic scenery with a unique view to marry in Sifnos
